Breaking Ground at the Farm

(early) June 2022

Design Meeting

Harry, Alison and Sophie meet at the farm site to discuss logistics for the next phases of the project such as sheet mulching, coordinating a compost delivery and plant placement. You can see in some of the photos below that irrigation hookups were already in the process of being installed so part of the conversation included making sure that the irrigation stations corresponded appropriately to the plants we were intending to use. For example, we planned to have both fruit trees and native plants around the border of the farm and we had to make sure that there were individual stations for both of those plant groups.

Sheet Mulching

Once the farm’s general layout was decided and the garden boxes installed, we prepared the soil both in the ground and in the veggie beds.

We had 20 cu yds of super fine mulch delivered in order to sheet mulch the floor. The garden boxes were partially filled with soil from the ground so we had bagged compost delivered to mix into the boxes as well as one thousand composting worms and five hundred Super Red European earth worms.
